Eligibility

The following provides highlights of who’s eligible.

Employees

If you’re regularly scheduled 30+ hours per week, you’re eligible for all benefits on this site except if noted otherwise.

If you’re regularly scheduled 20-29 hours per week, you’re eligible for all benefits on this site except dependent child tuition assistance and paid parental leave.

Here is when benefits go into effect once you’re hired or become newly eligible:

  • First of the month following date of hire or status change: Medical, dental, vision, flexible spending accounts, basic life insurance, MetLife supplemental life insurance, Unum whole life insurance, accident insurance, critical illness insurance, hospital indemnity insurance, prepaid legal services, and long-term disability.
  • After 90 days: Paid time off (PTO) and short-term disability. You’ll begin accruing PTO on your date of hire or status change, but there is a 90-day waiting period before you can use PTO.
  • After 12 months: You must complete 12 months of consecutive benefits-eligible employment before qualifying for paid parental leave.
  • Other: Employee tuition assistance goes into effect once you complete any probationary period. Dependent child tuition assistance is available to regular full-time employees after four years of continuous service (or two years of continuous service for employees hired before Jan. 1, 2018). Go to Education Benefits to learn more.

You have 30 days from your date of hire or status change to complete your enrollment in SmartSource .

If you’re eligible, you can enroll in auto, home, and pet insurance anytime during the year. Go to Extras for more information.

Dependents

When you enroll in a medical, dental, vision or dependent life insurance plan, you may also elect coverage for:

  • Your children (with submission of a birth certificate and Social Security number) up to age 26, regardless of the child’s student or marital status. Note: Coverage ends at the end of the month when your dependent reaches age 26.
  • Your legal spouse (with submission of a certified marriage certificate and Social Security number). If your spouse works for a Johns Hopkins Medicine affiliate, you cannot be covered as both an employee and a dependent. In addition, your eligible dependents may only be covered under one plan.

Qualifying life event changes

Outside the annual enrollment period, the only time during the plan year that you can add or drop coverage or dependents is when you have a qualifying life event, such as:

  • Marriage or divorce
  • Birth of a child/Adoption
  • Death of a dependent
  • Gain or loss of a dependent’s coverage
  • Change in your spouse’s employment status

To make a mid-year change in benefits, you must create a Qualifying Life Event request in SmartSource and upload supporting documentation within 30 days of the life event.

Changes to eligibility

If you transition to a new job, or the amount of hours you’re regularly scheduled to work changes, your eligibility for certain benefits may change. A summary of how benefits eligibility changes is available for each scenario below.

All employees are eligible for the following benefits regardless of how many hours they work:

  • Employee Assistance Program
  • Retirement account
  • Employee discount program

Full- or Part-time (30+ hours) to Limited (20-29 hours)

  • You’ll be eligible for all the benefits on this site except paid parental leave (PPL).
  • If you begin working fewer than 36 hours per week, the premiums — the amount you pay per paycheck — for medical, dental, and vision coverage will increase starting the first of the month following the date your eligibility changed.
  • Any accrued paid time off (PTO) balance will carry over. You may accrue less PTO beginning the date your eligibility changed because you’ll work fewer hours.
  • If you were full-time (40 hours per week), the amount you can earn through Healthy at Hopkins each year will decrease to $500.

Full- or Part-time (30+ hours) to Casual (0-19 hours)

You’ll no longer be eligible for the benefits on this site except those listed above that are available to all employees.

Your medical, dental, and vision coverage will end the last day of the month in which you became ineligible unless you continue coverage through COBRA.

The following benefits will end the date of your status change:

  • Basic life and AD&D insurance
  • MetLife supplemental life and AD&D insurance*
  • Short- and long-term disability
  • Accident insurance*
  • Critical illness insurance*
  • Hospital indemnity insurance*
  • Unum whole life insurance*
  • Prepaid legal services
  • Auto, home, and pet insurance*

* You can continue this coverage by contacting the vendor to set up an individual policy and be billed by the vendor directly.

Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA)

You have 90 days from the date of your status change to use any funds in your health care or dependent care FSA. After 90 days, any remaining funds are forfeited.

Paid Time Off (PTO)

Your PTO balance will be paid out at 50% and you won’t continue to accrue PTO.

Limited (20-29 hours) to Full- or Part-time (30+ hours)

  • You’ll be eligible for all the same benefits and become newly eligible for paid parental leave (PPL) once you’ve completed 12 consecutive months of benefits-eligible employment.
  • If you begin working more than 36 hours per week, the premiums — the amount you pay per paycheck — for medical, dental and vision coverage will decrease starting the first of the month following the date your eligibility changed.
  • Any accrued paid time off (PTO) balance will carry over. You may accrue more PTO beginning the date your eligibility changed because you’ll work more hours.
  • If you become full-time (40 hours per week), the amount you can earn through Healthy at Hopkins each year will increase to $1,000.
